The lower trails in the Umtamvuna Nature Reserve start outside the Main Gate to Eden Wilds, residents and holiday makers can go on various hiking trails. Umtamvuna is a botanical reserve, a rich canopied forest, thick with ferns, lichen and indigenous plants seen in their natural habitat.
Umtamvuna Nature Reserve is home to a large selection of birds, is a breeding ground for a colony of Cape vultures, which build their nests in the cliffs that border the river (provides hours of birding opportunities), The reserve is also home to baboons, several buck, the black backed jackal, monkeys including the Samango.
